My Keys to Layering

As you have probably been doing as well, all I have been wearing lately is layers and layers as I try to keep warm. I always get questions about layering and I think the key is having a couple basic pieces or styles that you can always turn to so you start your outfit off right. So here are my 4 keys that help me layer with every outfit

How to…Statement Coats

As someone who is always cold, it is vital for me to have warm winter coats to wear. However, I also always want to look cute and if I don’t like my jacket, I won’t wear it. This winter, statement coats have become my go-to. Here are my three favorite winter coats and some tips on how I like to wear them.

My favorite coat of the season thus far is definitely my cheetah print coat. I was a little hesitant to buy it, but I loved it so much that I just went for it. This much print and faux fur is a little bold, even for me, but it has been surprisingly easy to integrate this fabulous piece into my wardrobe. I especially like wearing it with dark neutrals and a bold lip. I love anything furry because it makes a bold statement while also keeping you warm. If you aren’t quite up to this level of fur, try a fur vest or a piece that has a little bit of fur on it. Then you can slowly start adding it into your wardrobe.

If fur isn’t your cup of tea, not to worry. There are lots of other ways to make a statement with your coat. A classic style in a bold color is one of those ways. It is easy to throw over any outfit and will add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral outfit. Of course I went with pink (is anyone really surprised?) but you could just as easily do blue, red, or green. Really anything to give your wardrobe a break from black. Even a white coat is fabulous because it will immediately elevate your outfit and help you rock that winter white trend!

If color and texture aren’t your thing, then go for a black puffer jacket. It will keep you incredibly warm and you can find ones with nice details. I love the gold hardware on this one and the belt. I’m always afraid I look like the Michelin man when I wear a puffer but this one is cut pretty slim and it is longer so it’s not just my torso that is puffy. Plus, the belt adds a cute girly detail and helps me cinch the coat in at the waist so I look more like a person than a donut. Somehow, even though it’s black, this puffer coat still makes a statement and is the perfect coat for winter. Until next time, stay warm!

How to…Dress Up a Sundress

2017, summer, how to wear, sundress, jewelry, clutch, OOTD, dress it up
Hello all, happy Sunday. This is going to be the first of two posts today as I had meant to post this yesterday and completely forgot! Anyways, I hope your weekend has been fabulous so far and you are enjoying a nice, relaxing Sunday morning.
2017, summer, how to wear, sundress, jewelry, clutch, OOTD, dress it up
As someone who has gone through a pretty dramatic dress size change in the last couple of years, as well as just starting out in the real world, my budget is a little tight. I don’t have the luxury to have a very extensive wardrobe, which means I need to make all of the pieces in my closet work double duty and be appropriate for multiple occasions.
2017, summer, how to wear, sundress, jewelry, clutch, OOTD, dress it up
This sundress, for example, I bought because it is very cool and perfect for a hot summer day. With sandals, it doesn’t need any accessories and is casual and fun. I repurposed it with knee high boots and a sweater for fall, which worked perfectly for work. Now, I wanted to make it even nicer so it worked for a party or Friday night drinks.
2017, summer, how to wear, sundress, jewelry, clutch, OOTD, dress it up
This is one of those outfits that works perfectly transitioning from work to drinks. You can wear the black heels with a cardigan or jacket for work. Then, for drinks, add in your bling and a structured clutch and you’re ready! The key to transitioning any outfit is always in your accessories. Make something business professional with a tailored jacket and heels. Make it more fun for your evening with big jewelry and a fun clutch. Until next time, XO

How to…Off the Shoulder

Hello all! I wanted a relaxing Saturday and while I was busy today, it was also productive and fairly relaxing as well. I hope y’all’s Saturdays were wonderful. For this week’s How to post, I wanted to talk about one of summer’s biggest trend…off-the-shoulder tops. This look seems to have been everywhere lately! I love the look, but it can definitely be difficult to rock and incorporate into your wardrobe.

I think we can all say that my style is typically pretty conservative and definitely girly- neither of which would be the first words you would use normally to describe an off-the-shoulder look. For me, whenever I try a new trend, I want to be able to experiment and branch out, but also stay true to my style. So, when looking for off-the-shoulder tops, I gravitated towards girly colors, ruffle details, and I made sure to style them in a more conservative way so I was still comfortable.

The biggest style advice I could ever give is to stay true to yourself. No matter what you are wearing, if it is something you love and sticks to your style, you will find a way to own it and feel comfortable doing so. When I first tried on this striped body suit, I thought no way will I wear this. It was clinging and showed quite a bit more skin then I normally show. But, at the same time, it was so cute and I had already kind of fallen in love with it. So, I took the plunge and bought it, but I had to work my way up to wearing it with shorts and a skirt and start with simpler and more conservative jeans.

For the off-the-shoulder look, make sure the top fits well- you don’t want gaping and you don’t want to be pulling up your top all day. If you aren’t ready for both shoulders to be exposed, try a one-shouldered top and ease your way into this trend. For me, ruffles make this look. They add more detail then just a simple tube top and dress up the look enough that you have some more flexibility. That is all for now, but happy weekend! Until next time, XO.

How to Wear…Stripes

2017, summer, stripes, summer, OOTD, red lips, how to wear,
Dress: Old Anthropologie, similar here and here; Pearls: similar here; Bag: Madewell
Hello! Happy 4th of July to all of my American readers! Typically, I’m not a dress for the holiday type person. I normally just wear whatever I want. But for some reason, I always want to wear something a little patriotic for the 4th of July.

I don’t want to wear something too ostentatious or over the top. For that, red stripes is the perfect option. Red stripes is something I can normally find in my closet without going out and buying a completely new outfit. Plus it is just the amount of subtleness that I’m looking for on the 4th of July.

A striped dress with pearls is an easy option because you don’t have to worry about anything else. You put on the dress and the pearls and you are all set for any social events you have planed whether it is a cook out or a party.

A striped top with jeans shorts or regular jeans is also a great option. I wore the above outfit today for a lunch meeting I had and a messy bun and red lips were the perfect accessory. What I like about stripes for this holiday is that you are being patriotic, but can still wear something that is your style and reflects your personality. Happy 4th! XO

How to Wear…Ruffles

2017, summer, OOTD, how to wear, ruffles, off-the-shoulder, J.Crew, Anthropologie, girly,
Earrings: J.Crew; Bodysuit: J.Crew; Jeans: J.Crew; Watch: Omega.
Hello all! Happy Saturday and what a beautiful Saturday it is turning out to be! Even though I work on the weekends, I always look forward to Saturday morning because I get to sleep in a little and enjoy some productive downtime in the morning before I head off to work. Today, I’ve been thinking a lot about ruffles. I adore ruffles because they are a fun, girly detail that fits perfectly into my style aesthetic. However, they aren’t the easiest thing to integrate into your wardrobe or even to start wearing in general. Here are some tricks I’ve discovered a long the way for adding ruffles into your wardrobe in a girly, but still adaptable to your style way.
2017, summer, OOTD, how to wear, ruffles, off-the-shoulder, J.Crew, Anthropologie, girly,
Necklace: Old Anthropologie, similar here; Top: Old J.Crew, similar here; Jeans: J.Crew; Watch: Omega; Purse: Old Anthropologie, similar here; Shoes: Pour la Victoire.
The easiest way to start with ruffles is to keep the ruffle small and unassuming and keep the rest of your outfit unassuming. This black t-shirt, for example, is the perfect introduction to ruffles. There is just a small detail on the bottom, but it doesn’t overtake the entire outfit. Because the t-shirt is black, your outfit is not automatically girly so you can make it as girly or not as you want.

Top: J.Crew, similar here and here; Jeans: J.Crew; Shoes: Cole Haan; Purse: Old Anthropologie, similar here.
Finding a top with only a small amount of ruffle detail might be challenging. But, if you find one with ruffles on the top, you can use your hair or a cardigan to up-play or down-play the ruffles depending on your mood. Also, if the piece is patterned, this tends to draw attention away from the ruffles because there is other stuff happening that you can focus on.

Top: Old Anthropologie, similar here; Necklace: J.Crew; Skirt: Old J.Crew, similar here, here, and here.
A ruffle does not have to be big to pack a punch. Some small ruffles at your neckline feels classic and you can easily amplify the impact by drawing attention to it with a big necklace. For ultimate impact, put your hair up. There is no where for the ruffles to hide and it will make your neck look longer.
2017, summer, OOTD, how to wear, ruffles, off-the-shoulder, J.Crew, Anthropologie, girly,
Hat: J.Crew, similar here; Necklace: J.Crew, similar here and here; Top: Anthropologie, similar here; Watch: Omega; Jeans: JBrand; Purse: Vintage Coach, similar here; Shoes: Madewell, similar here
If you love ruffles, but want to down-play the girly aspect, toughen up the look with bold, neutral accessories. Stay away from anything pastel or neon and stick to a black, brown, and gray color palette. Add accessories that speak towards a completely different style like a hat and motorcycle boots. Ruffles can be whatever you make them so don’t feel pinned into the girly corner if that’s not you.
2017, summer, OOTD, how to wear, ruffles, off-the-shoulder, J.Crew, Anthropologie, girly,
Top: J.Crew; Jeans: J.Crew; Watch: Omega
If you are really ready to take it to the next level, go for something one-shouldered or off-the-shoulder. This allows for maximum impact of the ruffles and is the perfect way to wear this fabulous summer trend.

Sunglasses: Oliver Peoples; Bodysuit: J.Crew; Belt: J.Crew; Shorts: J.Crew; Purse: Old Anthropologie, similar here; Bracelets: Similar here, here, here, here, and here; Watch: Omega; Ring: Similar here.
Don’t forget that with this, like with anything else, stay true to your own style and personality. It’s always important to branch out, but don’t wear things that make your feel like you’re trying too hard. You always want to be comfortable in your own skin because that is when you will look the most amazing! Until next time, XO

How to Wear…Statement Earrings

2017, summer, how to wear, statement earrings, J.Crew, OOTD,

Hello all! I hope your weekend has been fun so far. Mine has busy, but good, just how I like it. For this week’s How to Wear series, we are going to be talking about my favorite way to accessorize currently- statement earrings.
2017, summer, how to wear, statement earrings, J.Crew, OOTD,

For a long time, I didn’t really wear earrings. With my short hair, earrings of any kind were almost over-powering with an outfit and at that time, I wasn’t really accessorizing much. But now, obviously I love to accessorize and walk that line between just the right amount and too much jewelry.
2017, summer, how to wear, statement earrings, J.Crew, OOTD,

In my opinion, statement earrings are one of the easiest ways to accessorize because if you get nervous about your commitment, you can always let your hair down and cover them partially. Sometimes, this look is even the best option because you just get a tease of the jewelry until you turn and the light catches your sparkles.
2017, summer, how to wear, statement earrings, J.Crew, OOTD,

With statement earrings, typically I like to wear my hair up or pulled back to really show them off. I know for a lot of people, that can be a scary commitment, so here are ideas for wearing them that might make it a little easier for you!
2017, summer, how to wear, statement earrings, J.Crew, OOTD,

If you are nervous about this trend at all, start off simple. Keep your hair down or slightly pulled back so you have a buffer. Then, keep your outfit pretty simple and neutral so you aren’t dealing with patterns and mixing colors on top of statement earrings. Always make sure to try on statement earrings before you buy them. These, for example, are super light so easy to wear all day, but some can be deceptively heavy and will hurt your ears after a while.
2017, summer, how to wear, statement earrings, J.Crew, OOTD,

Once you feel comfortable here, it is easy to progress to a ponytail or bun that shows off your earrings completely. I love wearing huge earrings like this and an otherwise neutral outfit. Then, your earrings really do become the statement. Putting your hair up with bold earrings is also a great way to dress up a t-shirt or an otherwise more casual outfit.
2017, summer, how to wear, statement earrings, J.Crew, OOTD,

For this summer, my favorite way to wear statement earrings is with an off-the-shoulder top. It can be very difficult to pair a necklace with this kind of top, but big earrings are the perfect combination. They are so easy to show-off with no collar to interfere and are a great way to show off and emphasize your shoulders this summer. More statement earring tips will probably be coming out as the summer progresses, but always feel free to comment or email me if you need advise or have ideas! Until next time, XO

How to Wear…Neon

how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,
Hello all! Happy Saturday! Today marks the start of a new Saturday blog series and I can’t wait to hear your feedback. Starting today, Saturday blog posts are going to center around fashion and outfit posts, but also answer a question about how to wear a certain trend or item of clothing, or just give ideas in general about how to integrate certain pieces into your wardrobe. Just like with my other blog series, I would love to hear your feedback and I welcome any and all suggestions!
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,
So, here goes! As you know, My typical color palette leans towards girly pastels and jewel tones, but I’ve been loving the new neon trends and have been trying to find ways to integrate those bright colors into my summer wardrobe.
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,
My first suggestions if you are hesitant on the neon, start with something small like neon earrings, a necklace, or some kind of accessory. Then, you don’t have to commit your entire outfit to the neon trend, but can still mix your typical color palette up. These earrings and this necklace are absolutely to die for and would look great against black, navy or white. Also both are on sale at J.Crew right now!
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,
If you are feeling more adventurous with your neon additions, finding a neon dress is a full commitment, but does take out some of the work of trying to pair a top or a bottom with it. Personally, I think a neon dress or top is the best option. Neon bottoms seem like a lot and a neon top is easy to wear with jeans or white jeans and easy to tone down with a cardigan or a jean jacket thrown on top.
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,
If you are going the dress route, make sure the dress itself fits well and is something you are comfortable in. You don’t want to branch out with color and style at the same time because you will feel overwhelmed. I like both of these options because they are pretty simple in design, but are both flattering. Both also focus on one neon color, not multiple. Wearing one neon color is enough if you ask me.
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,
Once you find your neon piece, the hardest thing for me was accessorizing. I think the key is going simple. Nude shoes (black would work well too I think) looked great and classed up the outfits without adding any additional colors or details.
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,
Jewelry-wise, I think the darker color the better. Of course, I couldn’t not wear a necklace and I struggled to find ones that looked good. But, I discovered that if your necklace is a darker tone than your neon, then it helps to quiet the loud color a little bit. With this, as with anything else, the key is to be confident and also to feel comfortable. You will never be able to walk out of your house with your head high if you are uncomfortable so know your limits. Make sure to leave comments below and see you next time! XO
