Mixing Patterns with Tartan

Pattern mixing has always been one of my favorite things so it seemed like the perfect way to start off the new year and the new blog! First of all, let me say how excited I am about the new blog here and all of the exciting things I have planned for 2018. If you are not already signed-up for our newsletter, make sure to sign-up on the right. The newsletter will go out once a week with sneak peaks of upcoming content, exclusive details and style ideas, plus other exciting things you won’t see on the blog.

OK, now back to the important stuff, clothes! I feel like pattern mixing has this stigma of being really difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! Especially this time of year, you can easily mix two patterns and then tone it down with the rest of your  layers. Layering in general makes pattern mixing super easy because you have more options. So, if you are going to start pattern mixing, why not start now?

With an outfit like this, the plain jacket is what pulls the entire look together. So when you are trying to figure out what to wear, also take into consideration your non-patterned layers. These are what will help tone everything down while also connecting all of the pieces.

This skirt is one of my favorite pieces because it is tartan plaid, which I love. It also has navy and black in it so you can wear it with basically anything. As much as I love it though, it sadly doesn’t really fit me anymore. So I will be posting it on my ebay page later this week!

For those of you who don’t know, I am working on opening an online consignment store, but in the meantime, I have started posting early inventory on my ebay page. The things I am posting are not old or damaged in any way. They are just things I love, but no longer wear. So make sure to check it out and stay tuned for updates on the consignment store!  Until next time…

Staying with the layering theme, an easy way to begin a layered outfit is with a black skirt and a white button down. This is a classic combination that you know will look good and is probably in your comfort zone. You also could substitute the black skirt for jeans or black pants. From there, add a crew-neck sweater with a fun pattern or a little color to brighten up the look. To finish it, add a brightly colored, but solid vest so it isn’t too much with the pattern of your sweater.
For finishing touches, I like a big, but simpler necklace and fun shoes. The white soles on the bottom of these shoes was the perfect tie in to my white button-down. The key to an outfit like this is to inject your personality to make it yours. For me, that meant my leather skirt instead of jeans and fun, neon polka dots. But for you, it could be something completely different. You can still follow this formula, just personalize it so you are comfortable in it.
Not only is an outfit like this fun, but it is also extremely comfortable and will keep you warm on these crisp fall days. Happy weekend!

Polka Dots and Pink

2017, OOTD, summer, white jeans, polka dots, navy, pink,
Hello all! Happy Thursday! It has been a busy week already, but I’ve been very productive and have lots of fun things to share with y’all this weekend! While I’ve been busy, I’ve also been trying to deal with our crazy weather. It has been hot here, but not the super sticky hot that is normally typical for North Carolina in August.
2017, OOTD, summer, white jeans, polka dots, navy, pink,
This has been nice because I’ve been able to experiment a little with different outfits and layers. Plus, I’ve been able to wear my white jeans! I love the idea of white jeans, but they are definitely hard to wear when it is so hot outside. This weird in-between weather is perfect though because the white jeans are still summer, but you don’t freeze in the air conditioning.
2017, OOTD, summer, white jeans, polka dots, navy, pink,
I love wearing darker colors with white because it makes the white and the other pieces really pop. Navy is a perfect option because it isn’t as harsh as black but the white still brightens it up a lot. I love how these polka dots play against the navy and really stand out with this outfit.
2017, OOTD, summer, white jeans, polka dots, navy, pink,
Of course, I couldn’t be content with just a cute t-shirt so pink accessories were the perfect way to finish off the outfit. Lot’s of exciting things planned for the next couple of days plus a new Lefty Baking Life announcement so make sure to stay tuned! Until next time, XO

Sequins and Polka Dots

2017, summer, OOTD, sequins, polka dots, J.Crew,
Hello all! Happy Wednesday! This week has already been crazy busy for me, but I might has some exciting news coming soon, so cross your fingers for me! Hope y’all are having a wonderful week so far.
2017, summer, OOTD, sequins, polka dots, J.Crew,
So I love this skirt. But it was kind of an impulse buy and quite a bit out of my comfort zone. With that said, I still want to wear it all the time in a way that still fits my style as well as my day to day life. The first time I wore it, with my chambray shirt, was easy. The whole outfit came together so seamlessly and just flowed perfectly.
2017, summer, OOTD, sequins, polka dots, J.Crew,
This second go round was a little harder. A big thing for me is that I wanted to tone down the skirt enough that it wouldn’t be outlandish to wear it out and about during the day. That meant a t-shirt and keeping my jewelry minimal. This t-shirt was the perfect match because it is casual and looked perfect partially tucked in.
2017, summer, OOTD, sequins, polka dots, J.Crew,
Jewelry-wise, I couldn’t quite resist, but I made sure my earrings weren’t sparkly. The thing that really pulled together this outfit for me was the bag. I didn’t want anything to structured or fancy so this big, slouchy tote was perfect. Plus, it was big enough for me to tote my camera around in!

Until next time, XO

Summer Pattern Mixing

2017, OOTD, patterns, summer, polka dots, statement piece,
Hello all! Happy Saturday! Thank goodness, this week has felt impossibly long for some reason, hence the lack of posts, and I am definitely ready for a nice, relaxing weekend.  Mixing patterns is one of my favorite styles, but it can be so hard to do in the summer. It is so much easier when you have more layers to work with and can balance patterns with black tights or a chunky sweater.
2017, OOTD, patterns, summer, polka dots, statement piece,
In the summer, mixing patterns is definitely more challenging, but still fun if you can make it work. For me, the key to mixing patterns is either staying in the same color family or staying within the same pattern. If you have two completely different patterns but they are both navy and white, the combination will probably look good together.

2017, OOTD, patterns, summer, polka dots, statement piece,
If you aren’t staying in the same color family, I like to keep the patterns relatively similar so that there isn’t too much going on. With this outfit, the pattern on my shoes and on my top are both polka dot-esque, but don’t necessarily match color-wise. I wanted them separated, which is where the pink skirt comes in handy.

2017, OOTD, patterns, summer, polka dots, statement piece,
After I had the skirt, shoes, and top together, I was pleased with the outfit, but it needed a little something more. This necklace was perfect because the hanging beads closely mimicked the polka dots on my shirt and made everything flow together well.
Have a fabulous Saturday and until next time! XO

Mixing Black and Navy for Spring

2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
Hello all! I hope your week has been fabulous so far! Mine has been crazy busy getting back into the swing of things after Rome, but it has definitely been nice to be back. Vacations are incredible, but it is always nice to come home and sleep in your own bed and get back to your routine.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
As I mentioned, spring has definitely sprung here in North Carolina. Yesterday, it was almost 80 degrees! Spring is by far my favorite season because I love transitional clothing. It is always just the right amount of warmth that I don’t freeze, but cool enough that I can still layer. Plus, by this time every year, I am absolutely sick of my winter wardrobe and ready for something new!
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
When I walked into work on Monday wearing this outfit, one of my coworkers immediately asked me how I managed to wear black and navy together and not look weird. My other coworker overheard and commented that I just decided they looked good together and walked out of the house.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
As crazy as that sounds, mixing colors and patterns or trying new things is really that easy. When you decide you look awesome in an outfit, you carry yourself differently. You stand a little taller and strut your stuff a little more. With that going for you, no one will question your fashion choices, they will just comment on how great you look and admire your confidence.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
The key for me when wearing anything, whether it’s adventurous or a simple t-shirt in jeans, is to feel confident and beautiful. If you like what your are wearing, at the end of the day, does it really matter what any one else thinks? I don’t think so! For once, prioritize yourself and wear what you want!
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
I know that can all be a little difficult sometimes though and it is helpful to have tangible tips in addition to my philosophical ramblings. So, when mixing black and navy, I always like to choose a darker shade of navy. That way, it is closer to black and they are similar tones. Mix it up with some neutral jewelry and don’t try and over do it. Start easy with a navy top and a black cardigan or a black top and jeans. And then just add some gold earrings or a necklace.
2017, OOTD, spring, polka dots, J.Crew, navy, black,
We make wearing black and navy together so hard because it is an old stigma. But, black and navy want to go together! They look good against one another and normally once you start pairing them, it becomes incredibly easy to do so. Until next time, XO

Neon and White

2017, winter, polka dots, winter white, OOTD,
If you have been following along here on Lefty Living Life for a while, you will probably have noticed that I wear certain pieces over and over, just paired with different items and accessories. That is kind of my MO. I find pieces I love and have no interest in wearing anything else.
2017, winter, polka dots, winter white, OOTD,
The problem with this is your wardrobe can get very boring and repetitive if you aren’t creative. To keep my outfits interesting, I try to never wear the exact same outfit twice. That can be as simple as changing my earrings or my coat. Or it can be something more drastic like creating an entirely new combination. Either way, it keeps me on my toes and makes things more fun.
2017, winter, polka dots, winter white, OOTD,
This sweater for example. I typically wear it with jeans or hiding under a jacket and have always found it to be a little boring. However, against this cream skirt, the neon polka dots really pop!
2017, winter, polka dots, winter white, OOTD,
I was so happy to see this sweater making a statement and I can’t wait to wear it again soon. Just goes to show that experimenting can sometimes be exactly what a piece needs to make it awesome. Until next time, XO.

Sometimes, I have outfit days where everything just works for one reason or another. This outfit, for example. All of the pieces don’t necessarily match or look good together. But somehow, when you put it all on, it works. I am a firm believer that if two pieces don’t look good at first, adding a third component can make it better. A lot of times, this leads me to piling on bunches of pieces and eventually starting over completely. With this outfit though, everything worked the first time and I absolutely love it.
I hope you enjoyed your Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Until next time, XO.

Coral Polka Dots

Putting on an outfit always makes me think about all the other times I’ve worn the pieces. The fun things I did, the memories I made. That is part of the fun of clothes- they carry those memories and feelings. Sometimes, having that association with a piece can be bad. This sweater, for example, I wore for the first time when I got sick and had to go to the ER last year. Ever since then, I’ve struggled to wear it because of the bad mojo. But what I’ve come to realize is that you can overcome that bad mojo. Being sick last year was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with. Everyday was a struggle to get through. But everyday, I also learned a bit about my self. Being sick made me strong and now every time I wear this sweater I remember that. So if you have any clothes with bad mojo, rewrite that story and rock that outfit. XO

Red with Polka Dots

It is finally starting to cool off here and feel like winter and Christmas! Living in North Carolina, we almost never have a white Christmas so I don’t associate Christmas and snow. Every year, it really starts to feel like Christmas time for me after I see The Christmas Carol with my family. This Dickens story is one of my favorite Christmas stories, and if you have never seen the play, I would highly recommend it. Every year when we leave the theatre, I feel that Christmas spirit start to settle over me.
This year has felt even less like Christmas than normal because we haven’t decorated. Instead, my family and I are going to Costa Rica for ten days on December 26! I am so excited to enjoy some warm weather and simply relax for a week! XO
