Top 10: My Winter Essentials

Winter can sometimes be difficult to get through, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are my 10 essentials for surviving winter no matter what comes my way.

1. With my long commute this winter, having a way to keep my tea warm for the whole drive and at work has been vital. I absolutely love my yeti. I thought they were a little overrated at first, but it keeps my tea boiling from when I make it through my entire hour commute. When I get to work, my tea is normally still too hot to drink! I couldn’t ask for a better container.

2. Although I love black tea, I am a little limited because I can’t drink caffeine. However, my best friend and my boyfriend have made sure I am well-stocked with decaf black tea. Right now, I am rotating between these four and they are all delicious! Sangria ZingerEarl GreyChaiGolden Dragon

3. So I love tea and loose leaf tea and it can be hard to find cute infusers that can be easily transported. This was a gift and I am obsessed with it. I love sloths and this little guy is so cute hanging off my mug every morning!

4. The perfect companion for my tea drinking is a good book. I just started this one and it is so interesting! I love the Mitfords and I am so excited for this book.

5. Hopefully, everyone knows by now that I love turtlenecks and that are definitely one of my essentials this winter. If you are confused, you should check out our Turtleneck Thursday series! Here is last week’s installment if you missed it.

6. I have always been against puffer coats because they make me think of the Michelin Man, but I finally caved and got one this year. The final thing that pushed me over the edge is that they are supposed to be so much warmer than other coats. Let me tell you, it definitely is! This coat is noticeably warmer than my peacoat the the belt prevents the Michelin Man quality.

7. Other than being cold, my other winter struggle is my hands. They have terrible circulation and get dry really easily. These tech-friendly gloves have been a lifesaver when I’m walking around because they keep my hands warm without limiting my phone access.

8. My other necessity is my hand lotion. This stuff is a little expensive, but lasts forever and makes my hands feel so nice. I’ve been using this for years and cannot say enough good things about it.

9. For me, staying warm is all about layering. Sure you can buy a warm sweater, but you will be even warmer with a vest or something else on top of your sweater! This vest is one of the staples in my wardrobe. It looks cute by itself on top of a cute shirt or layered under a jacket.

10. The final key for staying warm? A blanket scarf. It is the perfect final addition to any outfit and I actually use mine as a blanket at work and in restaurants. If you are cold natured, a blanket scarf is key. You can thank me later. Until next time! XO

Top 10: January 3, 2017

Hello all! I can’t believe it is already 2017, but I am already excited for this year. If you aren’t already a part of our email list, make sure to sign up so that you can keep up with all the exciting activity here in 2017.
1. Many of you might not know this, but I am an avid baker and for many years had aspirations of being a pastry chef. Sadly those dreams weren’t meant to be, but I still love to bake. This year for Christmas, I made these sprinkle cookies with Christmas sprinkles and decorations for my friends. These are some of the best cookies I’ve ever made and they are always a hit!
2. Peppermint Brownies
In addition to sprinkle cookies, I also made peppermint brownies on my time off and they were to die for! This is such a solid brownie recipe and not too difficult. For half the batch, I substituted dark chocolate chips for the white chocolate the recipe calls for. What a delicious addition! Definitely one of my all time favorite brownie recipes.
3. I love anything sparkly, especially nail polish. I just got this color and I am already obsessed. It is not just sparkly, but also paints on as a solid color, which I love.
4. I have always been a fan of historical tv shows and I CAN NOT wait for this new one to come out!
5. One of our last top 10s was all about the music I’ve been listening to lately. One of the songs, Closer by Chainsmokers and Halsey, has been stuck in my head regularly for the past couple of months. This song has been crazy popular in general and has led to a lot of covers. My favorite is this one. Listen and let me know what you think!
6. You have probably noticed that I haven’t been wearing as many bracelets lately. This is not so much a style choice as a necessity with my job. However, I always have a watch and a hairband around my wrist. For Christmas, my sister got me this awesome bracelet that has a groove for your hairband. This way, you never lose it and your hair band is now an awesome accessory!
7. My best friend Kate now lives in Missouri instead of across the hall in my apartment. So to keep up with each other, we started a bookclub. Our first book was Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari and now are reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It took me a while to get into the book, but once I did, I could barely put it down! I can’t wait to start the show, has any one already seen it? What did you think of it?
8. As you saw on Sunday, I finally took the plunge and am now obsessed with my over the knee boots. Get ready, because they will be making a lot of appearances in my winter wardrobe!

9. If you aren’t already sick of champagne from all of your New Year’s Eve activities, try these champagne gummy bears.  I haven’t had the chance to try these yet, but I’ve been dying to! Have y’all ever had them?

10. I am an obsessive Vogue reader. I am normally a month or two behind, but I love reading through all the articles and seeing the fashion ideas. Michelle Obama was on the cover of December’s Vogue and her spread was just incredible. If you haven’t already read it, I would highly recommend it!

Until next time! XO

Top 10: My Top 10 Favorite Outfits from 2016

Hello all! This year has been a big year for me…I graduated from college and announced my consignment business, which will be opening in 2017. Plus I am now employed full time! In addition to all of that exciting news, this has been one of my most prolific blog years and has included some of my favorite outfits of all time. So for our top 10 list today, we are going to look back at some of my favorite outfits from 2016! Let me know if I forgot your favorite outfit or if you have any thoughts in the comments below. XO
2016, leather, stripes, summer, top 10
1. This striped shirt was a staple in my wardrobe this summer. It is so versatile and easy to wear. Plus, this blog shoot was one of the most fun shoots I’ve ever had. My mom takes most of the amazing photos you see on the blog and it is always an adventure for us as we try new poses and locations.
2016, pearls, sequins, summer, top 10
2. Sequins are a regular occurrence in my wardrobe and I love this statement making jacket. This was the perfect outfit when my boyfriend and I went out in New York. This is by far one of my favorite outfits of 2016!
2016, lefty, ruffles, summer, top 10
3. Ruffles were a new addition to my wardrobe this year and I am excited about them to say the least. This was just one of the ruffled outfits I’ve worn in 2016.
2016, leather, personal, ruffles, summer, top 10

4. I wore ruffles again on the first day of my new job! I bought this outfit as my “first day of school outfit” at my job, but this shirt became one of my favorites this fall and I don’t go more than a couple of days without wearing this skirt! Must be lucky!
2016, pastel, summer, top 10
5. Pastels have always been one of my favorite color groups, but this year, I have loved wearing lots of pastel accents against navy. Mixing pastels together is also one of my favorite ways to add more color to an outfit.
2016, 60s vibe, fall, pink, top 10
6. The 60s were a huge style influence for me this year. I have loved channeling that decade with mini skirts, color blocking, and big earrings. This was one of my favorite 60s looks from 2016.
2016, fall, pink, top 10
7. A new thing for me in 2016 was utilizing the tailor. Let the “Taylor goes to the tailor” jokes begin, but I have been extremely thankful to have a tailor when I am not ready to give up on pieces that don’t fit quite right.
2016, hat, layering, stripes, turtleneck, turtleneck thursday, winter, top 10
8. My new blog series this fall/ winter has been all about turtlenecks- tips and tricks for wearing them. Make sure to stay tuned on Thursdays for even more fun turtleneck ideas. This has been my favorite turtleneck outfit so far!
2016, dress pants, fall, mad men, red lips, top 10
9. I have been loving turtlenecks this winter, but also cozy knits in general. I love the idea of wearing a bulky sweater with feminine details like red lipstick. The combination gives any outfit that extra oomph as well as making it look elegant.
patterns, red lips, t-shirt, tartan, top 10
10. My final look from this weeks top 10 was actually from Christmas Eve a couple days ago. I love pairing t-shirts with big jewelry and dressing it up with heels. This outfit came together perfectly and had just the right amount of holiday flair.

Top 10: Music Edition

Hello all! I hope you are all having a good week so far! This week’s top ten is all about the music I’ve been listening to lately. If you have any suggestions for things I should be listening to,  I’d love to hear it!

1. It is that time of year again, and Michael Bublé’s Christmas CD has been at the top of my spotify playlist for a while!

2. Of course my most played Christmas song is always Mariah Carey. A classic that always puts me in the mood for wrapping presents!

3. If you like Mariah Carey, this version from Carpool Karaoke is a must! I couldn’t stop smiling when I was watching it.

4. Moving away from Christmas music, this new song by Lindsey Stirling has been stuck in my head all week. Different from your typical top hits song, but definitely worth a listen.

5. I love Ingrid Michaelson, and her new song, Hell No, gets me singing along every time it starts playing.

6. If you haven’t already heard this song by Lady Gaga, go listen to it now! I’ve had it on repeat for the last couple of weeks and absolutely love it.

7. If you don’t like country, you probably won’t like this tune sung by Little Big Town and written by Taylor Swift. But for all my country fans out there, this is a must listen.

8. This next one is not something I would normally listen to, but it has been my new song obsession lately!

9. I love the Lumineers and I was really excited when their new album came out. With the help of my boyfriend, I started listening to Ophelia, and it has become one of my favorite songs of late.

10. The last song on here, The Sound by The 1975, has been a song I’ve been jamming to all summer and fall and I still turn the volume up every time it comes on.

Tuesday Top 10

1. Happy Election Day! If you haven’t already voted, you might have a little time left, depending on your state, but make sure to get out there and be a part of our democratic system!
2. This weekend I watched The First Monday in May, and it was incredible! This movie is all about the planning of the Met Gala and its accompanying exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was expecting it to be interesting, but it was so well made and absolutely awesome! A must watch if you are looking for a new movie to watch.
3. As always on a Top 10 list, we had to include one of James Corden’s carpool karaoke. Today’s is sticking with the political theme and features Michelle Obama. No matter what your political views, this was a funny and entertaining episode and is great to watch!
4. I have been living in this fur vest since I got it a couple of weeks ago. It is perfect for layering under things, but also a great layer over a button-down or cute shirt as we transition into into fall and winter.
5. I’m sure you have already seen the trailer or at least the pictures of Emma Watson as Belle in the new Beauty and the Beast, but I wanted to make sure you saw them! Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite movies and I can’t wait until this reboot comes out!
6. Another must see trailer is for the Netflix special of Gilmore Girls. I have always loved watching Gilmore Girls with my mom and my sister and I am excited to watch these 4 episodes with them!
7. The final thing to watch is the new Netflix show, The Crown. I have not started it yet, but I have heard incredible things and I can’t wait to watch it! Have you seen it? What do you think so far?
8. I love tea and hot tea is vital for me in the winter. I also love sloths. So a couple of months ago, my boyfriend Devon got me this incredible sloth tea infuser. It comes in a variety of animal shapes, but also works very well. A must have for tea drinkers this winter!
9. Speaking of Devon, this weekend we spent a significant amount of time cooking. On Friday, we made chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes, so on Saturday we decided to make use of our leftover chocolate and blueberries. We melted the leftover semi-sweet and dark chocolate and then poured it over the leftover blueberries. We then put it into the freezer for a while and when we took it out, we had a chocolate bar with blueberries inside. I never would have thought of this combination (it was all Devon’s idea) but it is absolutely delicious!
10. Finally, turtlenecks. I have been talking about turtlenecks a lot lately and that probably isn’t going to change anytime soon. So, if I have convinced you that turtlenecks are awesome, try these. They are awesome and a great layering piece so check them out! XO

Top 10

Hello all! This week’s Top 10 is centered around things I have been reading, watching, listening to, etc. There are a lot of words…I’m just warning you now 🙂 So enjoy and I would love to hear what y’all think or hear about things you’ve been up to! XO
1. Ocean’s Eleven is one of my favorite movies of all time and they just announced a new all-women spin-off. To say I’m excited would be an understatement.
2. I absolutely love song mash-ups for some reason and this one with the top hits of 2015 has been stuck in my head all week!
3. It is probably obvious by now that I love J.Crew and their new fall style guide has had me craving fall clothes all week. Plus, they have started reintroducing leopard into the collection, which I couldn’t be more excited about! Katie Armour Taylor had a great overview of the fall style guide and here are some of my favorite looks.
Rolled up trench sleeves with button-down and cheetah loafers? New life aesthetic.
So clean and classy…I’ll take three!
I love all of the movement plus these shoes are incredible.
4. You might not know this about me, but I love Game of Thrones…like unhealthy obsession levels of love. And their new trailer for the next season has me on the edge of my seat already! I can’t wait for it to come back! Any good suggestions for what to watch while I wait?
5. If you didn’t already know, early this year, Christian Louboutin redefined nude with his collection of nude shoes to match a variety of skin tones. I love the idea of these and it is about time we reconsidered what nude means.
6.  In other fashion news, I just learned about the horseshoe stamp Birkin bag…the 1% of the 1%. A super interesting read from Christie’s
7. Speaking of Christie’s, this summer was a record breaking year for them in Renaissance/ Baroque art (my specialty). If you are interested, I would check out this article for the coverage of an event that might not happen again in our lifetimes!
8. For something a little more light, watch my new favorite James Corden carpool karaoke with Michelle Obama. I couldn’t stop laughing and Michelle is magical.
9. My other favorite thing to watch right now? The Great British Bake-Off. It is quintessentially British, funny, inspiring, and a cooking show only about baked goods. Basically everything I love and it’s on Netflix!
10. Finally, my best friend and I started a book club. Basically we live very far a part so we are reading the same book and talking about it in our weekly phone calls. First of all, I am terrible at bookclub because I never finish the reading (Sorry Kate!!!), but our book has been really interesting so far. It is called Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari. I have always loved Aziz, but the book is very well written and I am learning so much that I didn’t know about dating in the modern world. Any suggestions for our next book?

Top 10

Hello! I hope y’all are doing well! I am going a little stir crazy because we do not have cable or internet at my house right now…I know that there are things to do without wifi or tv, but for some reason I couldn’t think of any of them. Normally I get home from work and just hang out and work but I have now learned that “hanging out and working” really means using the internet haha! So I am definitely going to have to get creative this week with my activities!
Anyways, this week’s top 10 isn’t themed or anything but is just ten things that have recently interested me or that I like. Enjoy and have a wonderful hump day! XO
1. So I am a little behind on this movie, but I just watched Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette for the first time (it is on HBO for those of you who have access!). I was expecting to like it, but I absolutely loved it! The modern music that everyone always comments on created a nice tone that I think went very well with the movie and created this interesting connection between Marie and modern wealthy members of society
2. If you are like me and wifi-less, you should read The After Party. At first I thought it was just going to be a fun Gatsby/Mad Men combo and it definitely had those aspects, but the ending comes out of no where and was very surprising but very interesting to read.
3. Another wifi-less activity? Coloring. I know, it is a kid’s activity, but I have always loved coloring and with this new trend of adult coloring books, there are some very cool options on the market. Check out this one from Vogue that is on my wish list!
4. If you have not already seen this video of Amy Schumer and Anna Wintour switching lives, it is definitely worth the time!

5. I always have a song obsession that I listen to on repeat. Right now? It’s Crazy by Au Revoir Simone. I would love to know what y’all think of it!

6. You might not know this about me, but I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I probably eat at least one thing sweet every day. Lately, I have been unable to stop eating these sprinkle cookies. I even made another batch last night! I am not a huge cookie person normally, but these are sweet without being sicky sweet and they are soft instead of crumbly!
7. I am a bit of a sports fanatic, but I have never really gotten into the Olympics. The other night though, Natalie and I watched the qualifiers for the US Women’s gymnasts and it was so incredible! Meet the women here and see some of their incredible routines.
8. Alexa Chung is one of those people who I always look to for fashion advice and ideas and she just announced that she is launching her own clothing line! I could not be more excited!
9. In other fashion news, there are lots of fashion shows going on right now, but by far the most incredible one was the Fendi show in Rome where the runway was across the Trevi Fountain! What an incredible idea and use of a historical monument.
10. I just graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in art history. To say I like art would be a bit of an understatement. One of my favorite artists has always been Degas because he is able to capture this wonderful realism of expression and movement with these simple pastel marks and I find it incredible. Misty Copeland just recreated some of his works and they are magical. I am completely overwhelmed by all of them!

Feathers

For those of you who didn’t see the question on Tuesday’s post, someone asked a very interesting question and I wanted to repost it here with my answer…
What did you think of the motorized dress with the Swarovski crystals? I’m not sure how to feel about a dress that truly couldn’t be worn beyond the runway.
Tuesday someone asked a great question about Hussein Chalayan’s “Kaikoku Floating Dress” that is part of the exhibition. The dress itself is motorized and is not something that one could wear off of the runway. The comment was about how I feel about a dress that can’t be worn off the runway.
Seeing this dress in person, I didn’t like it. It’s not my style and I just wasn’t a fan. But no one is going to like everything in an exhibition.
Personally, with this dress, I have two somewhat conflicting opinions. First off, I don’t exactly love it aesthetically. However, my dislike of the dress has nothing to do with its functionality. This whole exhibition and the idea of displaying clothing in an art museum brings up the question of whether fashion can be art. In the case of this exhibition, many of the pieces are considered art because of how they are made and the extreme craftsmanship involved, but they are still functional pieces of clothing. However, art does not have to be functional. So an art object, in this case the motorized dress, can be modeled after something functional and not itself be functional. So, I think this dress is the perfect example of how fashion can be art and how a lack of functionality can be ok. http://www.designcatwalk.com/floating-dress/
I bought this top as a statement piece early this year and it has become a staple in my wardrobe. I thought it would be difficult to wear because of the feathers, but to be honest, I normally forget they are even there until I get dressed. My take-away from this? Even if a piece has very unique and interesting aspects, it doesn’t have to be difficult to wear. The key I think is if there is an interesting aspect, having the piece be a more neutral color makes it much easier to incorporate into your regular wardrobe. XO

Top 10…Manus x Machina

So this week’s top 10 is going to be a little different than previous ones. A couple of weeks ago, I visited my boyfriend in New York and it was an incredible, art-filled weekend! One of my favorite things from the weekend was going to see the Costume Institute’s exhibition at the Met, Manus x Machina. This exhibition is all about fashion in a time of technology and looking at traditional hand techniques and machine technology used together in fashion. The exhibition was so well done and I absolutely loved every second of it so I thought I would share with you my favorite ten pieces. Let me tell you, it was very difficult to narrow it down to ten pieces because I loved so many of them, but here were some of the highlights for me! XO
1. These three dresses were displayed together, but the one on the far left is by far my favorite! It is Dior 1949-50. This dress is so stunning and is hard to capture in photos. But the colors and details on the dress are incredible. Also, I sometimes have a problem with floor length dresses because either the bodice or the skirt is beautiful and the other is only mediocre. However, this dress does it all. The bodice is simple, but perfect and the skirt is full, detailed, and perfectly colored!

2. Of course this dress was the centerpiece of the exhibition. Seeing it online from the runway last year was amazing, but in person it was a completely new experience. The train was so long and detailed. But the dress itself was just one of those pieces that you could look at all day and still be overwhelmed. No wonder it was the centerpiece.

3. This is Chanel 1963-68. How could I not include a classic Chanel set. I adore the tweed and the navy trim. Dream outfit for sure!

4. This was one of the first things I saw in the exhibition. And granted, it is not the most exciting piece, but it is so classically beautiful. One of the most interesting things about this exhibition is that it was hard to look at the pieces without imagining how they would look on you. This dress I love so much because it is a style I would wear!

5. This Chanel dress from 2005-6 was nothing short of show-stopping. Definitely not my style and I wouldn’t want to wear it, but it is stunning. the combination of silk tulle and feathers was so beautiful in person and also had a wonderful three dimensional quality. I loved how there were all of these modern aspects, but the shape is so classic and conservative that it worked really well.

6. Ahh I absolutely adore these! They are sparkly, pink and neutral and beautifully detailed! They are also one of the pieces that I would love to see on a person. On a mannequin they are beautiful, but I would love to see how they actually fall on someone’s body. Also they are Alexander McQueen so what’s not to love?
 7. Yves Saint Laurent 1983. The silhouette of this dress is so simple, but I also feel like it would be flattering on a variety of body types. Also the details (in the photo below) are so beautifully done that it looks like the dress is one solid color that changes with the light! LOVE!

Details of 7’s sequins

8. Obviously I love these two because they are pink, but I especially love the front one because of the interesting use of coral and the skirt. It is so intricate and detailed and such an interesting material to use in a piece of clothing.

9. From 1928, Louiseboulanger. I am obsessed with this! The dress is so impeccably made and the feather skirt against the silk is just wonderful. I wish I could wear it for an evening!

10. This is from Dior’s 2005-6 collection. I loved this piece because it was so cool to see a deconstructed dress that was still haute couture. It is so modern because of the deconstructed aspect, but also classic because of the structure of the dress.

Friday Top 10

Of course, as soon as I decide to post a certain thing every Tuesday I also schedule five hours of classes that day. Moral of the story…my top 10 lists are going to shift around as necessary, so you will just have to keep checking back to see when I post it! So with that, here is this week’s top 10!

1. I love food movies and Chocolat might be my favorite one. First of all Johnny Depp…need I say more? Plus they are in France and the main food is chocolate. Basically three of my favorite things!

2. As you know, I am an art history major and I love art. Currently, I am taking a modern art class and we just started talking about Matisse who is one of my favorite artists of all time! Here are some of my favorite works by him…

3. My favorite type of candy other than chocolate are gummies and I recently discovered a candy website that has the most adorable looking candies I have ever seen! I haven’t had a chance to try them yet, but I can’t wait to try the champagne bears for my birthday!
4. My new music obsession, Andra Day and her song Rise Up
5. If you don’t already read Lena Dunham’s biweekly newsletter, Lenny, you should. The writing is incredible and they cover some very interesting issues.
6. For Christmas, Natalie signed up for this service called Olive Box. Every month they send you different and unique stationary. I have only received a month so far, but already I am excited! My two cards from January were so cute (I already used both of them) and I can’t wait to continue to nurture my snail mail addiction!
7. I have always loved the Fitzgerald’s, but really knew nothing about them. I just finished this incredible book though called Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald. After reading it, I kind of hate F. Scott, but it was so interesting a different from the usual point of view.
8. One Direction released their newest video this week and not only do I love them, but it is also one of my favorite songs on the album!
9. My most recent binge watch on Netflix? Death in Paradise. A British, fun, cop show…my favorite thing and totally worth it!
10. J.Crew just launched its first sunglasses collection and  I can barely contain my excitement!!! I will definitely be looking into these this weekend 🙂
