Bridgerton: The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn
If you have not already read my post about the first Bridgerton book, do that first! The Viscount Who Loved Me is the second book in the series and focuses on the oldest Bridgerton, Anthony. As I watched season 2 before reading the book, my reactions to the book were colored by the show. So, here is your warning if you haven’t read or seen it!
-Spoiler Alerts Ahead-
Alright, so let’s get into it! I have to say, I was a little trepidatious about reading the second book. I LOVED Anthony and Kate in the show, but there were definitely some aspects of Season 2 that I was upset about. The two main things were how Kate ended up going behind Edwina’s back a lot of the time and how Kate slept with Anthony before they were engaged. Neither of those really seemed necessary for the story line and I just didn’t love it. I was willing to look past it though because I love the Kate/Anthony romance so much.
However, this is just another example of the book being better than the movie/tv show. Neither of those things happen in the book! Anthony never gets engaged to Edwina, so there is not any going behind the back (thank goodness) and they don’t sleep together before they are engaged. I know that is kind of a prudish thing to care about in 21st century society, but for the time period, it bothered me. We are ignoring a lot of historical facts, but sex is such a major factor after people are married in the 18th century. It bothered me that the show ignored that.
Anyways, the moral of the story here is the book is incredible! And if you liked Season 2, you will love the book!
